What is a silicone sex doll?

A silicone sex doll is a full-size doll made entirely from silicone, a smooth, flexible synthetic rubber moulded over a posable metal skeleton. Silicone is non-porous, holds fine detail and copes with heat and stains better than TPE, but it is the most expensive of the three doll materials. Around 5% of the full-size dolls on lucidtoys.com are full silicone.

The material

Silicone is a synthetic rubber that cures into a stable, non-porous solid. It takes very fine detail from the mould, such as skin texture, lips and fingers, and keeps its shape well over time.

Because it is non-porous, silicone does not soak up water or dye the way TPE does, so it is easier to keep clean and more resistant to heat and staining. It is also firmer to the touch and more expensive to produce.

How it feels

Silicone feels smoother and firmer than TPE. It has less squish and springs back quickly when pressed, and the skin has a silky finish. If you want the very softest feel, TPE is softer; if you want crisp detail and easier care, silicone is the better fit.

How to care for it

Cleaning

Wash with warm water and a mild, unscented soap or a cleaner made for dolls, and rinse the openings with an irrigation bottle after every use. Silicone is non-porous, so it is quicker to clean than TPE. Keep water away from the neck joint, as the skeleton inside has metal parts.

Drying

Pat the skin dry with a soft, lint-free towel and dry the openings with an absorbent stick or rolled lint-free cloth. Silicone does not hold water in its surface, but water can still sit in the openings and around the joints, so make sure the doll is fully dry before dressing or storing it.

Powder

Powder is optional on silicone. A light dusting can reduce the lint and dust that silicone skin tends to pick up.

Storage

Store the doll lying flat on a soft surface, or hanging if its skeleton and hanging kit are designed for it. Cover it with a clean cotton sheet to keep dust off. Silicone copes with warmth better than TPE, but keep it out of direct sunlight and away from heaters. If the doll has implanted hair, comb it gently and keep it dry.

Staining

Silicone resists staining much better than TPE, but strong dye from dark or new clothing can still transfer over time. Choose light-coloured or colour-fast clothes and wash new clothes first. Do not scrub the face, as makeup can wear, and avoid harsh solvents.

Lube

Use a water-based lube. Avoid silicone-based lube, which can degrade silicone skin.
