What is a TPE sex doll?

A TPE sex doll is a full-size doll made from TPE (thermoplastic elastomer), a soft, stretchy, rubber-like material moulded over a posable metal skeleton. The material

TPE is a blend of plastic and rubber-like polymers. It melts when heated, so it can be poured into a mould around the doll's skeleton, and it sets soft and flexible. That is what gives TPE dolls their squishy, fleshy feel.

The trade-off is that TPE is porous. Tiny pores in the surface can hold water, oils and dye, so the doll needs washing and drying properly, and it is more sensitive to heat and staining than silicone.

How it feels

TPE is the softest doll material. Press it and it gives under your hand, then slowly returns to shape. Many buyers prefer it for cuddling and holding. The surface can feel slightly tacky, which a light dusting of renewal powder fixes.

How to care for it

Cleaning

Wash with lukewarm water, never hot, and a mild, unscented soap or a cleaner made for dolls. Rinse the openings with an irrigation bottle after every use. Keep water away from the neck joint and the head, as the skeleton inside has metal parts.

Drying

Pat the skin dry with a soft, lint-free towel, then dry the openings with an absorbent stick or rolled lint-free cloth. Let the doll air-dry completely before powdering or dressing it. Because TPE is porous, moisture left inside can cause odours and mould.

Powder

Once dry, dust the skin lightly with a renewal powder made for TPE dolls. It keeps the surface silky and stops it feeling tacky. Reapply after washing, or every few weeks if the doll is stored.

Storage

Store the doll lying flat on a soft surface, or hanging if its skeleton and hanging kit are designed for it. Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from heaters. Avoid leaving weight on one spot for long periods, such as a hand pressed under the body, as TPE can crease or dent. A clean cotton sheet keeps dust off.

Staining

TPE can absorb dye from dark or newly dyed clothing, bedding, ink and newsprint. Choose light-coloured or colour-fast clothes, wash new clothes before use, and do not leave the doll on dark fabric. Avoid harsh solvents, which can damage the skin.

Lube

Use water-based lube only. Wash it off after use as part of the normal cleaning routine.
